Garment Care & Storage

Some garments carry more than just fabric, they hold memory, identity, and history.
Whether it's a wedding dress, a family christening gown, or a garment of historical significance, the right storage makes the difference between something that lasts and something that slowly deteriorates.
Here's how to give your garments the protection they deserve:
Garment Boxes & Bundles
We carry a range of standard garment boxes made from durable, acid-free board with a built-in buffering agent that actively shields fabrics from harmful gases and environmental damage over time.
To find the right size, lay your garment out and fold it the way you'd want it to sit inside the box.
Once you're happy with the arrangement, measure the folded dimensions:
Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Depth (mm) — and compare these against the internal dimensions listed under the 'Specs' tab on each product page.
If none of our standard sizes are quite right, we can custom make a box to your exact specifications.

If you cannot find a size to suit, we can
Custom Make a Box to your specifications.

Extra Protection
Once your garment is in the box, layering unbuffered acid-free tissue between each fold keeps fabric surfaces separated and individually protected.
We also recommend tucking tissue inside the body and sleeves to gently fill out the shape and prevent hard creases from forming over time.
For garments made from natural fibres such as silk, wool, or cotton, our Unbuffered Acid-Free Silk Tissue is the best option.

Kākahu Storage
Kākahu require a storage approach that respects both the garment's physical structure and its significance. We recommend a custom-made box with internal tube inserts so the garment can be stored rolled rather than folded. This avoids the pressure points and creasing that flat storage can cause over time.
Tyvek is an excellent choice for wrapping your kākahu, adding a strong protective layer that won't trap moisture. It's particularly well suited to kākahu that are in active use, as Tyvek is strong and durable enough to withstand repeated wrapping and unwrapping without tearing or deteriorating. Use Cotton Tying Tape to secure the Tyvek gently around the garment.
